Anthropic commits $50 billion to US data centres — and 2 GW of TPUs and Azure — without naming a power source

In three weeks Anthropic announced up to one million Google TPUs ('well over a gigawatt' in 2026), $50 billion of Fluidstack-built data centres in Texas and New York, and up to 1 GW on Azure. None of the announcements said where the electricity would come from.

On 23 October 2025 Anthropic said it would expand its use of Google Cloud TPUs to as many as one million chips, worth tens of billions of dollars and bringing "well over a gigawatt" of capacity online in 2026. On 12 November it announced $50 billion of its own data centres built with Fluidstack in Texas and New York, with sites coming online through 2026. On 18 November Microsoft and NVIDIA announced a partnership under which Anthropic commits $30 billion to Azure and may contract up to one gigawatt more, on Grace Blackwell and Vera Rubin systems.

The Associated Press noted that Anthropic did not disclose the exact locations or what source of electricity the sites will need. Anthropic publishes no environmental report, no per-prompt figures and no climate targets; Amazon remains its primary cloud and training partner, with Project Rainier's roughly 500,000 Trainium2 chips.

Why it matters for the index: Anthropic's compute is set to roughly triple in a year while its disclosure remains at zero, which caps the transparency pillar and leaves every footprint figure on its profile an estimate.
