Amazon's emissions rise 6% to 68.25 Mt while AWS posts the lowest water intensity disclosed

Absolute emissions grew from 64.38 to 68.25 MtCO₂e in 2024 as carbon intensity per dollar fell 4%. AWS reported PUE 1.15 and WUE 0.15 L/kWh, a 17% improvement.

Amazon's 2024 Sustainability Report shows the familiar pattern: efficiency up, absolute footprint up. Emissions rose about 6% to 68.25 million tonnes CO₂e while intensity fell from 75.6 to 72.6 gCO₂e per dollar of gross merchandise sales. The company matched 100% of its electricity with renewable energy for a second year and keeps its 2040 net-zero target.

AWS's data-centre metrics are the strongest disclosed in the index on water: a global PUE of 1.15 against an industry average of 1.25, and a WUE of 0.15 L/kWh — 17% better than 2023 — with 53% progress toward returning more water than its operations use by 2030.
